Make sure to bring a backpack, a camera to capture the gorgeous scenery, some insect repellent to keep sandflies away, and a big smile. You will be sent a gear list when you book.
As long as you are able to walk with a pack, then you should be fine on any of our trips, but the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the wilderness experience. When training for one of our trips, it is best to practice walking with a pack carrying some weight. You can contact us to inquire about specific details.
Our Heaphy and Old Ghost Road packages do not include accommodation on the night before the tour, and your meal on the last night at Karamea / Westport.
Department of Conservation (DOC) public huts are spread throughout the park. These huts range from large 28 bunk huts with wood stoves to basic remote 4 and 6 bunk huts with open fireplaces. We partner with DOC to incorporate these huts in our tours as alternative accommodation does not exist on The Heaphy and Old Ghost Road tracks. There are no shower facilities, hot water, electricity or wifi at any huts, but during the summer months there are many lakes and rivers for swimming. If tenting on some of our trips, we use quality tents, and most tenting is within reach of huts if extreme weather occurs.
We are entering a rainforest and need to be prepared for all conditions. Because conditions can change rapidly, our guides are well equipped and prepared for any weather.
